Biography
Rebecca Joan is a circus artist that uses aerial hoop and invented apparatuses to create interdisciplinary solo work. She discovered circus arts in 2016 after a search for a physical activity that excited her. Believe it or not, she started with silks and trapeze. While she still dabbles in trapeze, you’d be hard pressed to find her anywhere near fabrics these days. Her first lyra class was in 2017 and she fell instantly in love.
Rebecca’s deep well of curiosity extends to circus in thrilling ways. She loves learning from new coaches and takes any chance she can to expand her knowledge. Although lyra is her primary apparatus, she also practices juggling, aerial cube, trapeze, pole, hula hoop, tippy lyra and more. If it’s metal and it spins, count her in! She has participated in many showcases with Buffalo Aerial Dance and Bird’s Nest Circus Arts. Previously, she performed around Buffalo NY with Buffalo Aerial Dance, and taught at the studio for 2 years.
Rebecca is currently developing a one woman show called The Heaviness of Nothing. She is proud to have started work on the show during the 2023 Hupstate x Saltonstall residency in Ithaca, NY. Her work explores themes of mental health and caters to the curious and unique.
Rebecca is based out of Buffalo NY, where she lives with a Doug, a dog, and 2 gremlins disguised as cats.
